Starting school is one of the biggest milestones in a child’s early years. It is an exciting time, and understandably, it can also bring a few nerves and questions, for children and parents alike. The good news is that helping your child feel ready for school is not about teaching them to read or write before they begin. It is about building the confidence, independence and everyday skills that help them settle in, make friends and enjoy learning.
At Fair Foundations, we believe every child deserves a positive and confident start to school. Alongside school readiness, positive, connected parenting plays a powerful role in helping children thrive, not just in their first year of school, but throughout life. In this article, we look at what school readiness really means, how positive parenting supports it, and the simple things families can do at home. We also share how our child and family services can support your family throughout the journey.
What does school readiness really mean?
School readiness is often misunderstood. Many parents worry their child needs to know their letters, numbers and how to write their name before kindergarten. In reality, readiness is much broader, and much more about a child’s overall development than academic ability alone.
A child who is ready for school is generally able to:
- Separate from a parent or carer and feel safe in a new environment
- Communicate their needs, ask for help and follow simple instructions
- Play and share with other children, and manage everyday feelings
- Manage small tasks independently, such as putting on shoes or opening a lunchbox
- Show curiosity and a willingness to try new things
These social, emotional and practical skills form the foundation for learning. When children feel secure and capable, they are far better placed to focus, engage and enjoy their school day.
The link between positive parenting and confident kids
Children learn a great deal from the relationships around them, and a warm, supportive home is one of the strongest foundations for confidence. Positive parenting is about guiding children with encouragement, consistency and patience, rather than focusing on what goes wrong. It helps children feel loved and secure, which in turn helps them cope with change, build resilience and approach new experiences, like starting school, with confidence.
Positive parenting does not mean being a perfect parent. Every family faces challenging days, and support is always welcome. Our Programs for Parents, including the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program, Bringing Up Great Kids, and Tuning into Kids, give parents and carers of children aged 2 to 12 practical tools and strategies to support their child, understand emotional coaching and navigate everyday parenting challenges. If you would like more personalised guidance, our Parent Support Hub offers tailored support for parents and carers building stronger family foundations.
Simple ways to build school readiness at home
Some of the most valuable preparation happens through everyday moments at home. You do not need special resources, just small, consistent habits that build skills and confidence over time.
Encourage independence
Give your child small responsibilities they can manage on their own, such as packing away toys, dressing themselves or opening their own snacks. These simple tasks build the self-help skills they will use every day at school.
Create gentle routines
Predictable routines help children feel calm and secure. A consistent morning and bedtime rhythm makes the structure of a school day feel familiar, and helps ease the transition when school begins.
Read, talk and play together
Reading stories, singing songs and simply chatting throughout the day all support your child’s language and listening skills. Play is one of the most natural and powerful ways children learn, so make time for it often.
Support social and emotional skills
Help your child name their feelings, take turns and play alongside others. Playgroups and group activities are a wonderful way to practise these skills in a supportive setting before school starts.
How Fair Foundations supports your family
Preparing for school is a journey, and no family needs to do it alone. For more than 50 years, we have supported families across Fairfield and Greater Western Sydney, with a culturally diverse team who understand the different backgrounds and languages of our community. Here are some of the ways we can help.
School readiness programs
Our School Readiness Programs are designed to help children feel confident and excited about starting school. Big School, Big Minds is a free school readiness program created especially for children from culturally diverse backgrounds and their parents. Through fun, hands-on group sessions, children build the social, emotional and learning skills they need for a positive start to kindergarten, while parents and carers are supported with practical strategies to make the transition a smooth one.
Playgroups for early learning and connection
Our Multicultural Supported Playgroups are free, friendly sessions where parents, carers and children aged 0 to 5 can connect, play and learn together. Children enjoy play-based learning, while parents build confidence, gain practical parenting tips and feel supported in a relaxed, welcoming space.
Early learning and care
Quality early learning helps build strong foundations for school. At our Occasional Care service in Wetherill Park, a qualified Early Childhood Teacher leads a preschool program that supports school readiness through engaging, age-appropriate learning. And once your child has started school, our Outside of School Hours Care provides a safe and supportive space before school, after school and during the holidays.
Every child in Greater Western Sydney deserves a confident start
School readiness and positive parenting go hand in hand. When children feel secure, capable and supported at home, they are ready to step into school life with curiosity and confidence, and to keep thriving well beyond their first day.
Wherever you are on the journey, we are here to help your family build firm foundations for a strong start in life.
