The holidays are often described as a joyful and exciting time, but this doesn’t reflect the very real stressors that many people experience. Holiday stress and loneliness affect many in our community, especially when financial pressure and social expectations build. What’s meant to be the most wonderful time of the year can instead feel overwhelming, isolating or unexpectedly lonely.
Financial stress and rising costs
As the cost of living rises, the expectation to purchase gifts and plan holiday meals don’t necessarily ease This pressure can create real financial strain for individuals and families, often accompanied by guilt or shame, as though they’re facing these challenges alone.
Our Community Hub is here to support people through these difficult times. With emergency relief support as well as food hampers being available, Fair Foundations can meet immediate needs, reduce stress, and lessen the impact of financial hardship during the holiday season.
Emotional burden and loneliness
The holidays can also bring emotional pressure. Missing loved ones, whether they’re overseas, interstate or no longer in your life, can intensify feelings of loneliness. Parents, too, may feel stretched trying to keep everything together while quietly carrying their own worries.
When life is already challenging, these feelings can be amplified, making it harder to enjoy the season in the way you may hope.
The pressure to ‘Get it right’
On top of financial and emotional stress, there can also be pressure to make the holidays feel ‘right’. To create special moments, host gatherings, or keep up with family or cultural traditions. These expectations can amplify negative emotions, creating ‘I should be’ scenarios instead of accepting what is within your capacity and control.
Building connections through community groups
Community can be a powerful way to build connections and feel less alone. Our community groups such as our Arabic Women’s Group, Vietnamese Men’s Group, and Sewing Group allow people from a similar cultural background or with similar interests to come together, opening a door for community and connection. Our Community Hub staff can help you join a group or other community activities, helping you build a sense of belonging.
For parents, loneliness manifests when you don’t have someone to share your experiences with. Children can’t meet the emotional needs of an adult, and that’s where supported playgroups make a difference. They provide a space to connect with other parents while learning parenting skills, teaching your child social skills, or simply having a routine set. As your child gets to connect, so do you.
A safe space to talk and be heard
Sometimes, what someone needs most is a safe and welcoming space to go and chat. Our Community Hub is open for this reason: a space where you can sit, be heard, and receive support from staff who understand the challenges people face, especially at this time of year.
You’re not alone this holiday season
The holidays can be difficult – from financial pressure to emotional stress or the weight of social expectations. With the support of community, these challenges can feel lighter. Whether you need practical assistance or a connection to others, Fair Foundations is here to support you, help you feel less alone, and bring back joy to the most wonderful time of the year.
