Nhà Alwan – Colours of Home: Refugee Week Workshop

Celebrate the stories and cultures of refugee mothers and their young children in Fairfield LGA through two creative workshops with artist Anney Bounpraseuth.
Over two weeks, the Nhà Alwan – Colours of Home workshops provide a creative space for mums and their children to connect, share stories, and build meaningful relationships.
Together, participants will contribute to a large, collaborative artwork using fabric while celebrating culture, heritage, and identity in an environment that strengthens a sense of belonging.
In this workshop, you’ll make your own fabric square (an applique), using:
- Upcycled fabrics: Giving new life to recycled materials.
- Iron-on designs: Easy ways to attach shapes to your fabric.
- Embroidery: Adding beautiful hand-stitched details.
- Machine sewing: Learning to use a sewing machine.
Bring a piece of your story: Do you have a special fabric at home? We can help you sew a small piece of it into your artwork so your memories become part of the exhibition.
Create at your own pace: You don’t have to finish everything during the workshop. You can take your piece home and keep working on it in your own time if you’d like.
Be part of an exhibition: Once all squares are complete, they will be stitched together into one large artwork with the final piece being displayed at Powerhouse Youth Theatre for the community to see.
Meet the artist: Anney Bounpraseuth is an artist born in Australia. Her family comes from Laos. Her art tells stories about who we are, where we come from, and how we can create a new future for ourselves.
