How youth camps build resilience, confidence, and connection for young people

Fairfield is one of Australia’s most culturally diverse communities, with more than half of residents born overseas. It is also one of the most disadvantaged local government areas in NSW. Many young people grow up facing additional pressures linked to financial stress, social isolation, and limited access to opportunities that support their wellbeing and development.

These challenges can affect confidence, school engagement, and a young person’s sense of belonging. Early support can make a meaningful difference, helping young people build the skills and relationships they need to navigate challenges and feel connected to their community.

This was the purpose of Fair Foundations’ Lead the Way youth camp, held at the end of January for young people aged 12 to 14. Guided by evidence-based approaches, the camp helps young people build resilience, confidence, and strong social connections during early adolescence. It provides a safe and supportive space where participants can develop leadership skills and form positive peer connections.

For many, arriving at the youth camp felt unfamiliar. Some participants were quiet and unsure of what to expect. Others had never taken part in a program like this before. Over two days, through shared experiences and encouragement, many began to open up and try new things.

About the ‘Lead the Way’ youth resilience and strength camp

The Lead the Way youth camp supports young people at an important stage of their development. It focuses on helping participants understand their emotions, build resilience, and learn how to work well with others.

Through a mix of creative workshops, physical challenges, and group activities, young people were encouraged to reflect on their strengths, communicate openly, and support one another.

A key message throughout the camp was that leadership is not about being “the boss”, but about listening, encouraging others, and taking responsibility. Participants explored different leadership styles and began to recognise their own ability to support and positively influence their peers.

Building confidence and connection

The youth camp focused on building trust and connection within the group.

Activities encouraged young people to step outside their comfort zone in a supportive environment. Through workshops and team activities, participants practised communication, problem-solving, and working towards shared goals.

One young person arrived feeling withdrawn after losing a parent when he was younger. At first, he kept to himself and spoke very little. As the camp progressed, he began participating in group activities and engaging with others.

By the end of the camp, he shared that he felt happy and included and was enjoying being part of the group. He also said:

“I would like to have more days on the camp and do more activities with Fair Foundations.”

Experiences like this show how a youth camp can help young people rebuild confidence and feel a sense of belonging.

Learning resilience in action

Throughout the youth camp, young people took part in a range of physical and leadership activities designed to challenge them in positive ways.

During archery and obstacle-based activities, participants learned that mistakes are a normal part of learning. They practised staying calm, focusing their attention, and trying again after setbacks. Staff introduced simple techniques, such as pausing and breathing, to help manage frustration and stay focused under pressure.

Group challenges like bridge-building or cup-stacking encouraged teamwork and persistence. Young people worked together to plan, adapt, and support one another to complete the task, helping them see how cooperation strengthens outcomes.

Another participant, who had not previously been involved in youth programs, embraced these challenges and enjoyed the opportunity to work alongside others.

“I like the Go-Karting because we have fun and I enjoy racing and challenging my friends.”
“My favourite part of the camp was doing the resilience workshop and doing the bridge activity because it was fun and we used teamwork skills to build our bridge.”

Through these experiences, participants saw that resilience can be developed, and that encouragement from others helps build confidence and motivation.

From participation to belonging

Over the course of the youth camp, many young people began to feel a stronger sense of connection and belonging.

Young people who were initially quiet began speaking more openly and encouraging one another. Participants recognised their strengths and discovered they were capable of more than they had expected.

Many young people left the youth camp feeling more confident and motivated, and expressed interest in attending future camps and staying involved in Fair Foundations programs.

Lasting impact beyond the youth camp

The impact of a youth camp extends beyond the activities themselves. For many, it becomes a gateway to ongoing support, including youth programs, mentoring, and leadership opportunities.

Every young person deserves the opportunity to feel confident in who they are and hopeful about their future. Fair Foundations hopes to continue delivering youth camps and expanding opportunities across the Fairfield community.
