How to Apply for Disability Support

Whether you’re applying for disability support through the NDIS or looking into other local services, knowing where to start can feel overwhelming. At Fair Foundations, we understand how important it is to get the right support, and we’re here to make the process easier for you. From understanding your options to connecting you with the right programs, our team is here to guide you every step of the way, so you can access the support you need, when you need it.

Types of disability support available

Not all disability support requires an NDIS plan. You can access community programs, in-home support, and one-on-one help through local providers like Fair Foundations, even if you’re not yet eligible for the NDIS.

Here are the types of support available:

  • NDIS-funded support: Available to eligible individuals with permanent and significant disability, providing individualised funding for supports and services as outlined in their NDIS plan. Eligibility is determined by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA).

  • Non-NDIS support: A range of disability services funded by the NSW government, local councils, and community organisations. These may include community participation programs, respite care, information and referral services, and some therapy supports for individuals who may not meet NDIS eligibility criteria or are waiting for NDIS assessment.

  • Short-term help: Services designed to meet immediate or temporary support needs. This can include emergency respite, short-term accommodation, or interim support while an individual is undergoing NDIS assessment or awaiting plan approval. These services may be funded through various sources, including NSW government programs or specific funding initiatives.

How to apply for NDIS support

If you think you may be eligible for the NDIS, here’s what the process looks like:

  1. Check your eligibility: Visit ndis.gov.au or contact us for help

  2. Gather evidence of your disability: medical reports, support letters, assessments

  3. Submit an Access Request: this can be done online, by phone or in person

  4. Get an outcome: If approved, you’ll be contacted to set up a planning meeting

  5. Work with a Support Coordinator: Fair Foundations can help you understand your plan and connect with services. Learn more about our Support Coordination service here: Support Coordination.

What if you’re not eligible for the NDIS?

If you’re not eligible for the NDIS right now, you’re not alone. You still have options.

At Fair Foundations, we offer:

  • Community-based activities and day programs

  • In-home support for daily tasks and independent living

  • Culturally inclusive programs designed for your needs

  • One-on-one help from our Disability Support Hub to explore alternative pathways
